The Soret Coefficients in Binary Aqueous Alkanol Solutions: Comparison between a Theoretical Model and the Experimental Data

Abstract


The precise measurement of thermodiffusion or Soret effect in liquid mixtures is very difficult; a debate regarding the “benchmark values” is always found in the literature. In this paper, we have evaluated the published data for three binary systems (water-methanol, water-ethanol and water-isopropanol) using Drickamer and Dougherty’s model with a mixing rule for the ratio of the viscous energy to the cohesive energy (τ) for associating mixtures. A good agreement has been found between the theoretical calculations and the experimental data from Platten et al. In particular, the temperature dependency of a modeling parameter τi∞ and its importance in the accuracy of Soret calculations are addressed.
