Abstract

This paper presents finite elements simulation of frictional, elastic- plastic contact between two cylinders as well as a cylinder and a flat surface. Some deterministic analytical approaches have also been proposed to approximate the roughness of surfaces and provide valuable numerical information. The results of theoretical and finite element solutions have then been compared with those of Hertz theory. The comparison shows that plasticity produces qualitative changes in the distributions of local pressure in the contact. The roughness of surfaces is another important parameter that alters the contact stresses.
