A New Analytical Approach for Fast and Accurate Dynamic Simulation of MMC-HVDC System

Abstract


The Speed of execution along with acceptable accuracy of the simulation is crucial for Modular Multilevel Converter based High Voltage Direct Current (MMC-HVDC) systems in offshore applications. The high number of power electronic components in the MMC-HVDC system poses a challenge to solve them using the existing methods, based on average models, with required speed and accuracy. This paper presents a method to simulate all the submodules of the MMC-HVDC system, which enables to study of the dynamics in the subsea cable, submodules, and at the system level. MMC-HVDC system in a standard three-phase CIGRE benchmark configuration is modeled to validate the analytical method. It is compared with PSCAD simulations (based on Dommel’s method) and validated both in steady state and in transient conditions of the MMC-HVDC system. The results indicate that the analytical method is accurate, and the execution time is lower compared to PSCAD based on Dommel’s method.
