New Analytical Method for Dynamic Analysis of Electrical Networks

Abstract


This paper presents a new analytical method of solving the dynamic circuit models faster than the well-known 4th order Runge Kutta and Dommel’s methods. In the proposed method, the time domain solution to the general state-space equation is derived from the final value and the initial values of higher-order derivatives of the state variables. The proposed method comprises of only one-step matrix calculations per time step, allowing it executing faster iterative simulations. The method is validated by simulating basic power system models through all three methods, viz 4th order Runge Kutta, Dommel’s method, and the proposed method. Two linear models namely a transformer model and subsea cable model and two non-linear models namely the half H bridge converter and the half- wave diode bridge model are considered. The proposed method is validated with Dommel’s method both in steady state as well as in transient conditions and it is applicable for electromagnetic simulation. The results are accurate and the execution time is found to be lower compared to Dommel’s method and 4th order Runge Kutta method.
