Performance Improvement of the Control Techniques of a Grid-Connected Photovoltaic System with Battery Storage Management

Abstract


This paper proposes a robust control of photovoltaic system connected to grid accompanied with a battery storage system that improves the solar energy use. Generally, the proposed control consists on providing voltage and frequency (V-f) support to the grid instead of high load addition and ensuring an active and reactive power (P-Q) control. However, the main contribution of this work consists of improving the performance of the control techniques of grid-connected photovoltaic system by using another type of controller instead of the conventional PI controller and making a comparison between the two types of correctors (PI and PR controller) in order to determine the effectiveness of the proposed control. The component of the studied system are the battery energy storage system based lithium- ion technology, the DC-DC bidirectional power converter, which is used to connect the battery to the DC bus, the DC-DC converter, the DC-AC converter, load and finally the electrical network. In order to validate the robustness of the proposed control, a simulation using the Matlab/Simulink software has been done. Consequently, the obtained results are satisfactory and ensure a better transport of energy by providing voltage and frequency (V-f) support to the grid and reducing the harmonic rate in the current injected to grid. The simulations results show the cooperation of both photovoltaic power plant and battery storage system in order to satisfy the load requirement.
