Abstract

According to statistics, more than 80% of railroad accidents are due to the damaging to rails’ welded areas because of the presence of defects. Therefore, the quality of the track is an important element for traffic security. This quality is degraded by the presence of rails welding defects. When the state of these defects reaches a critical level, the damage processes can put the rail out of order. The control of these defects is thus essential to help preventing any risk of failure. It is in this sense that this study is registered, and through which it was developed a method to control the selection of ultrasound waves’ propagation angles for a better visualization of the internal rail defects with their sizes and locations. By the proposed method, it was possible to improve the control and later the maintenance, knowing the method in effect is limited to the simple detection of the anomaly with a very approximate localization.
