Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to examine the vulnerability of buildings to the impact of a tsunami wave by understanding the behavior of a test building loaded by tsunami forces. The procedure used to achieve this goal is the analysis of the capacity and fragility curves of the test building. The gulf of Cadiz is chosen as the study area. A 3D model of a test RC building is designed in a structural analysis software that uses the finite element method. The norms and codes applied in designing the building as well as the guidelines for tsunami forces are described. The building is loaded with tsunami forces and the maximum displacements and reactions are fully analyzed. Capacity and fragility curves are plotted and the methodology of calculations for different scenarios is explained. To validate the model, a comparison is established with the statistical data collected and analyzed from previous tsunami events. The results describing the correlated and non-correlated curves of the frame elements are discussed, with the explanation of the various factors influencing the correctness of the study findings. Finally, the benefits of this procedure on assessing the vulnerability of building against tsunami is presented, such as its objectivity in judging the behavior of the building, less time consuming and the reduced costs of the analysis.
