Abstract

The first structural aspect that a yacht designer has to face is the choice of hull and superstructure constructive material, since, for modern yachts and sailing craft both, steel and aluminium are very popular. There are many advantages to both steel and aluminium boats. Yacht designers must also consider factors such as weight and cost when choosing between these materials, as well as the intended use and lifespan of the vessel. Additionally, the design of the hull and superstructure will play a crucial role in determining the yacht's speed, maneuverability, and comfort level for passengers. Therefore, it is essential for yacht designers to carefully evaluate and incorporate all of these factors into their decision-making process when selecting the most appropriate material for a yacht's construction. Ultimately, the choice of hull and superstructure material will greatly impact the overall performance and longevity of the yacht, and should be carefully considered and planned out by experienced and knowledgeable yacht designers. In this paper a finite element analysis of main machinery foundations of a high-speed special purpose vessel is presented since, in Classification Society rules and regulations there are no particular constrains regarding metal engine foundation and so it is not possible to assess them by direct calculations.
