Abstract

In this study, an attempt to estimate the machining performance of AISI 410 and 420 grades of Martensitic stainless steel during CNC milling operation has been made. A fifteen-run experiment has been carried out to find how the values of cutting force (Fc) and surface roughness (Ra) are influenced by feed rate and spindle speed. Experiments have been conducted at 5 levels of spindle speeds, 3 levels of feed rates and a constant depth of cut of 0.6 mm. The results have showed a decrease in the cutting force when the spindle speed has been increased. On the other hand, surface roughness has been reduced up to a spindle speed of 1500 rpm and then it has seemed to be increasing. When feed increases, both the Fc and Ra values also increase. The reason behind comparatively higher Ra and Fc values in MSS 420 than MSS 410 is due to the presence of higher carbon and chromium percentage. The impacts of feed and speed on Fc and Ra have been analyzed. The results indicate that spindle speed and the feed rate are the main factors affecting surface roughness and cutting force.
