Abstract

The compacting behavior of biomasses of cork, Cytisus, Cistus and Eucalyptus and some of their mixtures were studied by uniaxial compression simulating the pelleting process. The obtained compression data were evaluated with some classic mathematical compression models. The estimates of two of these models complement each other, in such a way that a combination of both models was suggested and adopted in the present study. This new combined equation establishes a proportionality relation between the pellet's density and volume ratio, leading to a powder ranking according to the compressibility of the biomass powders under study. Furthermore, a three-entry abacus relates the density and relative volume of the pellet with volume reduction of the material, being compressed. It proves to be an interesting tool for selecting biomasses, from the point of view of their compressibility.
