Abstract
This article presents the effect of backlash on flash temperature of spur gears. Backlash in gears is one of the nonlinear parameters that can act as internal excitation and highly influence the life of gear teeth. To investigate the influence of friction coefficient on the flash temperature of the gear, a spur gear with a backlash from 0 mm to 1 mm, with 0.2 mm increment, is modelled by considering a pinion and gear in contact where the pinion is subjected to a constant angular velocity. The results of finite element analysis in ABAQUS with plane strain assumption and analytical results are compared with the experimental results from the literature. The results obtained in this study show that the flash temperature is maximum on the gear without backlash and the finite element and analytical results are in good agreement specifically within a single tooth contact region.
