Effect of Fin Addition on Inlet Valve on Air-Gas Intake Flow of Dual Fuel Engine Based on Computational Modelling

Abstract


The dual fuel engine is a promising solution to reduce the emissions and cost of operation of engines, but unfortunately, it has a reduced engine power and torque, therefore, it should be improved in order to increase its performance. The addition of fins on the air intake valve is a improvement method. The objective of this paper is to investigate the effect of inlet valve fins on the turbulent flow of dual fuel engines. The method used in this paper is to simulate air flow through an intake valve using Ansys Fluent Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software. Three intake valve fins are compared in this paper, namely the original one, an intake valve with three fins, and an intake valve with five fins, in two different conditions of 12° ATDC and 42° ATDC on the intake stroke. The result shows that the best turbulence intensity is produced by the intake valve with five fins.
