Abstract

This study investigated the effect of Titanium Nitride (TiN) layer on AISI 304 by DC sputtering on hardness, corrosion resistant and corrosion fatigue cracking. DC sputtering has been performed of 25-30 mA, 2.5-3 kV, 10 mm of clearance, 30% of nitrogen gas. The duration of the process has been performed as follows: 0, 30, 60, 90 and 120 minutes. Vickers hardness test has been carried out with a load of 5 grams for 10 seconds. The corrosion test and the corrosion fatigue cracking have been performed in a bovine serum solution. The results show that the TiN layer has improved the evaluated parameters. It has increased 1.25 times of hardness from 252 VHN, it has reduced the rate of cracking at less than 1.154 MPa√m loads, and it has reduced 1/8 times of corrosion rate from 0.378 mpy. The optimum value has been at 120 minutes of duration specimen.
