Abstract

The 2009 ONU Convention on Climate Change set the global temperature increase limit at 2°C; if the global temperature increases more than two degrees, the consequences will be catastrophic for humans and nature. The primary cause of global warming is the high atmospheric concentration of Greenhouse Gases (GHG). The implementation of energy efficiency methodology in the final use of energy in any organization can contribute to reduce up to 38% of GHG emissions, and it is one of the most promising pathways for sustainable industrial development worldwide, especially in developing countries where the Climate change needs to be controlled by 2030. An assessment of the identification of energy-saving potentials in fourteen companies in the industrial sector of the Colombian Caribbean Region has been carried out, through the implementation of the tools provided in the ISO 50001 energy management standard, increasing the energy efficiency without affecting the productivity, especially in small and medium-sized enterprises. Among the results obtained, it is found that most of the characterized industries have measurement deficiencies, lack of company policies that prioritize energy efficiency, and continuous improvement of energy performance concerning the production process. Nowadays, the production indicators are designed without taking into account energy consumption, which is reflected in total savings potentials identified around 11,500 million of Colombian pesos per year; approximately the 80% corresponds to electricity and 20% to natural gas. Finally, close to 73% of the total savings potentials identified, equivalent to 8.4 billion of Colombian pesos per year, are related to operational control measures, maintenance management, and production management, which do not require the acquisition of new technologies. The inclusion of energy efficiency indicators and energy efficiency management tools into the companies organizational management are necessary for the latest international and national ISO 50001 standard.
