Abstract

Accuracy in dimensional and surface roughness measurements in manufacturing systems are vital in order to produce consistent quality products. This study presents an evaluation of dimensional accuracy and surface roughness on a UHMWPE acetabular liner produced by a compression molding and machining with a CNC milling machine. The dimensional accuracy was measured by a coordinate measuring machine (CMM), while the surface roughness value was obtained by a roughness tester. In these experiments, 16 samples were prepared by the compression molding and CNC milling, and then each sample was analyzed to the dimensional accuracy and surface quality. The accuracy in dimensions of the outer and inner radius of acetabular liners has the same values independent they were invented by the compression or milling operations. The value of surface roughness in the outer part of all samples as a result of compression is lower than that of the machining result. For the inside part of the acetabular liner, two samples of machining results have the lower surface roughness values than those of the compression results. It is envisaged that the present results would add to the knowledge for manufacturing of the UHMWPE acetabular liner through compression molding or CNC milling.
