Abstract

This work is devoted to the rational of the local criterion for strength when predicting the performance of metal structures. Numerical analysis of the elastoplastic stress-strain state of steel specimens with an acute incision, tested for tension, is performed. Based on the results of the analysis, it is suggested to use an average value of the plastic deformation intensity, in a small area near the crack tip, as the local criterion for strength. It is shown that this criterion is sensitive to the material properties and the test temperature. For engineering applications of this approach, an expansion of the experimental data base is required.
