Abstract

This research paper is an introduction to a completely new type of muffler which aims at increasing the brake power and fuel efficiency of engine by having a relatively lower backpressure in exhaust system compared to stock mufflers. This is achieved by providing the exhaust gases with a calculated and better flow path which reduces the exhaust gas backpressure. This improves the specific fuel consumption and the fuel efficiency of the engine. The limiting condition is that this designed muffler should satisfy the noise level norms in India and it does satisfy them. The modelling of the muffler is done in Ricardo WaveBuild3D software. Iterations are done on its various parameters and simulated in Ricardo WaveBuild software. This paper consists of a back ground about the work, which includes the introduction of muffler, types of muffler, information about the model, procedure of simulation and results of the simulations. The designed muffler is manufactured, tested and validated in the Formula Student Car of College of Engineering, Pune' (COEP).
