Abstract

In this study, the performance of R290 refrigerant is experimentally measured to analyze its applicability for water cooler application, especially in tropical countries. A water cooler test bench with a nominal capacity of 1.5 kW is specifically designed and developed for R290 refrigerant. Tests are conducted using R290 refrigerant at an evaporating temperature of 10°C and different condensing temperatures of 38°C, 43°C, 48°C and 55°C. Condensing temperatures are set referring to the Indian Standard (IS) guidelines. The performance of the refrigerant is analyzed in terms of pressure ratio, cooling capacity, coefficient of performance and compressor discharge temperature. The results showed that the R290 system performs well with reference to the coefficient of performance and discharge temperature. The overall performance of the system showed that R290 refrigerant is the most suitable, energy efficient and environment friendly refrigerant.
