Abstract

To prevent any accidents due to failure of the rails and to reduce the maintenance costs, many studies based on statistics have shown that in rails, welded areas are the origin of the primer damages that might cause serious accidents. These studies have shown that there are some residual stresses in the rails and especially in the welded areas that cause this phenomenon. These constraints are generated by thermic welding processes. This study investigates the effect of the width of the weld joint in the rails on the residual stresses and the mechanical behavior of the rails. Through a series of numerical simulations, this dependency has been highlighted. Indeed, from a certain width, the level of residual stresses becomes very critical and can cause damage. The results were discussed in relation to observations putting in evidence the presence of certain defects.
