Abstract

This paper presents the effects of carbon loading on the mechanical properties of the vulcanized epoxidised natural rubber (ENR) containing 25 % mole epoxidation. The ENR 25 with four different carbon loadings (0, 20, 40, and 60 p.h.r.) have been used in this study. Two tests were selected to determine the mechanical properties of the ENR 25 which are tensile test and compression test. It was found that the mechanical properties of the ENR 25 were increased as the carbon loading increased. The result from the tensile test showed that the tensile stress and the tensile Young’s Modulus were increased as the carbon loading increased. However, in compression test, the compressive strength was increased but the compressive Young’s Modulus was decreased as the carbon loading increased. In addition, the increasing of carbon loading has increased the ENR 25 stiffness, thus the ENR 25became more brittle and less elastic.
