Abstract

Numerical investigations were conducted on a DI diesel engine modified to be run as a premixed charge compression ignition engine to determine its flow field near TDC. A three dimensional CFD analysis was done on a typical diesel engine and validated against experimental data. The standard bowl was compared with modified bowl 2 and 3. It is seen that while Bowl 2 was able to generate higher swirl, bowl 3 generated a slightly higher turbulence at TDC. Hence this bowl is more suitable for use in diesel and a detailed spray and combustion analysis will provide more insight into the actual pollutant formation and combustion.
