Abstract

In this paper, we propose an efficient compression method for phonocardiogram (PCG) signals. It is based on an automatic thresholding of the discrete cosine transform (DCT) coefficients obtained after transforming the original signal into the frequency domain. The threshold finding is achieved using the peak signal to noise ratio (PSNR) as the controlled quality criterion. The Linear quantization and the iterative Lloyd algorithms are compared when applied on the non-zero DCT resulting coefficients. In order to enhance the storage efficiency the lossless two-role encoder is used. The experimental results obtained on a set of normal and pathological different PCG waveforms, point out the efficiency of the developed method.
