Abstract

Morocco is a country with moderate seismicity, but vulnerable to earthquakes. Indeed, only a small part of the existing traditional buildings designed according to some local earthquake-resistant construction rules. This paper presents an evaluation of the seismic vulnerability which is performed using the equivalent static method, called the method of spectrum capacity. This method is applied to a type of traditional buildings in the medina of Fez, which is classified a World Heritage Site by UNESCO and a large academic center as a center of traditional architecture. The study of the seismic vulnerability of these buildings is an essential step for seismic retrofit.
