Abstract

An analytical approach based on nonlinear and non-iterative static procedures is proposed for the seismic risk assessment of traditional earthen buildings. The presented method is simple enough to allow the assessment of damage to various buildings. In fact, for many types of traditional houses, the capacity curve and the function of vulnerability are established to assess damages based on displacement as a result of an earthquake, and then by overlaying this function to that of response spectrum, the point of performance that represents the actual movement of the structure is defined. Finally, the results obtained by manual calculations are compared to  numerical analysis "pushover" results which are performed by a non-linear calculation software for validation. The seismic vulnerability analysis could propose constructive solutions to strengthen and stabilize this type of structures.
