Abstract

An extensive laboratory investigation was carried out to study the effects of different parameters on the permeability of steel fibre reinforced concrete. The effects of fibre content, fibre type,  cement content and curing age were studied. Straight, crimped and corrugated fibres in weight fractions of 0.0%, 1.0%, 2.0% and 4.0% were used. The results of the study indicated a significant decrease in the permeability of concrete with the addition of steel fibres. The permeability decreased with increasing fibre content, curing age and cement content. The type of fibres used also affected the permeability as indicated by maximum permeability with straight fibres and least permeability with corrugated fibres. The permeability, however, increased for mixes incorporating higher weight fractions of corrugated fibres. The Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) statistical method was used to evaluate the effect of these factors on the permeability of SFRC. A α level (probability of error) of 0.05 was used for ANOVA test.
