Abstract

The study of magnetic saturation modeling is as old as the machines themselves. The existence and importance of magnetic saturation in induction machines have been experimentally verified and well recognized. The conventional model of induction machines is based on linear magnetic properties of the machine. As in any electromagnetic system, the presence of magnetic saturation introduces nonlinearity in the behavior of induction machines also. The cardinal challenge in the modeling of induction machines is that the machine has to be accurately modeled so that realistic performance characteristics can be predicted. Unfortunately, conventional models are not suitable for predicting the dynamic performance of induction machines subjected to physical phenomena such as magnetic saturation. Various modeling techniques have been developed in dealing with the problem of magnetic saturation. This paper provides a review of the effect of magnetic saturation on induction machines as well as the major techniques used to incorporate its effects in the induction machine model.
