Analytical Method of Switching Angles for Harmonic Mitigation at High Levels of 3-Phase T-type Inverter
The significant disadvantage of the simple staircase modulation method, the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) is high when this method is applied to a high-level inverter because the step voltage does not conform to a sinusoidal waveform at all levels. This paper presents an analytical method of the switching angles of the inverter to mitigate the THD. This method is suitable for high levels of a 3-phase T-type inverter. An equation is proposed to determine the first switching angle position when the step voltage does not conform to a sinusoidal waveform. A simplified solution is proposed to control the step voltage to conform to a sinusoidal waveform by shifting the switching angle through the novel structure of a 3-phase, 19-level T-type inverter. The detail of switching angles divided into 54 states to control the proposed inverter is described. Based on simulation results, the THD percentage of the proposed method is lower than for the simple staircase modulation method. Finally, the THD of the line-to-line voltage based on the experiment equals 3.90% which is very low. This result confirms the accuracy of the proposed analytical method.
