An Application of Energy Storage to Mitigate Power System Frequency Deviation Due to PV Power Fluctuation

Abstract


This paper proposes a method to reduce power system frequency deviation from PV power fluctuation, based on a frequency domain approach. A concept of PV power filtering is adopted in the magnitude reduction of PV power fluctuation. The cut-off frequency of the PV power filter corresponding to the system natural frequency is evaluated. The proposed filter has shown to reduce effectively the speed deviation and to bring the system frequency of the interconnected power system back to the nominal limit. The proposed sizing of the PV power filter is based on a specific power system characteristic. The estimated size of the proposed power filter is moderate and no additional monitoring and control systems are required.
