Abstract

The effect of cross magnetization caused by magnetic saturation and the axis-currents in tooth-coil wound permanent magnet synchronous machines (PMSMs) with embedded magnets is studied. In case of tooth-coil machines, cross saturation may seem different compared to integral slot winding machines. The variation of torque is investigated based on the results of the saturation analysis made by finite-element-method-based numerical analysis. This paper compares the inductance characteristics of three different machines with the same stator and shows the effect of cross saturation phenomena in torque production. The validation of the calculated results is confirmed by experimental results with one machine design.
