Maintenance Planning for Electricity Distribution Networks Using Reliability Indices

Abstract


An electric power distribution network (EPDN) is a large and complex system with different types of sub-systems and components. To achieve the optimal availability of the system, a large number of maintenance tasks should be conducted. Allocation of the maintenance tasks and resources is a challenging decision for engineers and managers. Available mathematical models for the maintenance optimization of power equipment are complex, and most require a great amount of input data, which may not be readily available. Hence, applying these models is a problem for the electrical utilities. In order to overcome these difficulties, this paper used reliability indices (SAIFI and SAIDI) and customer importance to develop a Risk Priority Number. Thereafter, the developed factor is used to prioritize distribution maintenance activities.  The SAIDI and SAIFI can be estimated through daily repair and failure report data, and customer importance can be quantified based on expert opinion. The application of the model is demonstrated by a case study.
