Abstract

The traditional electricity generations are gradually replaced by the renewable generation sources such as solar Photovoltaic (PV). The intermittency of PV generation caused by the passing-cloud could have profound impacts on the performance of electricity distribution network. This paper provides a review on the potential impacts of clouds to grid-connected PV system on distribution systemIn addition, the evaluation on the impacts of PV integration that caused by the variability of sun irradiance due to clouds were presented. The review suggests that the potential impacts of PV system on distribution networks due to clouds are power fluctuations, voltage fluctuations, power losses and voltage regulation. Hence, a few approaches have been suggested to mitigate these problems and subsequently increase the reliability and performance of the system. This paper begins by describing the basic structure of grid-connected PV system, followed by description of clouds conditions such as cloud types, speed and shape that can affect the sun irradiance over the PV array. Next, the potential impacts and their mitigation approaches are discussed.
