Abstract

Energy storage systems (ESSs) are envisioned to be more popular during the next decades as part of Smart Grid expansion. Especially, as uncertainty with intermittent resource penetration increases the importance of frequency control reserves (FCRs), ESSs has considered as one of potential resources in FCR provision. ESSs can be very efficient resources for frequency control, which activation time is shorter and more flexible than traditional resources. In this work, we provide a valuation method for ESSs in tertiary reserve resources. We will also explain a brief overview of frequency control services and characteristics of ESSs. An indicative study is presented where the proposed method assesses the value of ESSs from provision in the competitive reserve market
