Remote user authentication scheme allows only the authenticated user to access the remote server over insecure channel. Several password and smart card based remote user authentication schemes have been proposed for  secure authentication .In the existing  remote user authentication schemes exploits hash functions that resist masquerading attack, parallel session attack and  insider attack. However, these schemes cannot provide strong mutual authentication, forward secrecy and user anonymity. In this paper, we propose an improved and strong remote user authentication scheme using smart card and hash functions to solve the security weakness. Furthermore, we compare the proposed scheme with the other related schemes to prove our scheme having low computational cost, security and efficient one. The proposed scheme is suitable for distributed system that resists current possible attacks and fulfills the essential security requirements. The proposed scheme computational cost is reduced by 15 % and it is efficient than the other related schemes.
