Abstract

In mobile ad hoc networks (MANET), the existing Media Access Control (MAC) protocol does not maximize the overall network throughput. Also it causes the network links to utilize higher power for data transmission. In order to overcome these issues, in this paper, we propose an energy efficient MAC protocol in MANET based on channel utilization and queue size. In this protocol, the source node that desires to transmit the data packet to its destination node, appends its queue state and channel utilization with request to send (RTS) frame and transmits it
to the destination utilizing the utility function. After the destination verifies the RTS frame for error, its sends the clear to send (CTS) frame along with queue state and channel utilization information to source node using utility function. Upon receiving CTS frame, the source transmits the data packet to the destination node. By simulation results, we show that the proposed protocol improves the overall network throughput and minimizes the energy consumption
