Abstract

As a potential environmentally benign renewable energy source, wind power is becoming more and more fascinating to society. In general, there are two types of wind turbines: horizontal and vertical. Vertical axis wind turbines are suited for small-capacity household applications because of their potential benefits, which include omnidirectional operation, the ability to withstand turbulent and strong winds, low installation and maintenance costs, etc. To achieve better wind turbine aerodynamic performance, the design and selection of the airfoil play a crucial role. This research focuses on the experimental evaluation of various designs of airfoils for H-rotor vertical-axis wind turbines. Prototypes of five airfoil designs are made, and their performance is evaluated at different wind speeds in a wind tunnel test setup. Two of the five profiles tested show higher torque output at the average operating wind speeds.
