An Accurate Photovoltaic Emulator Based on Two Closed-Loop Control Systems Including Partial Shading Conditions

Abstract


This paper introduces a new control structure for a PV emulator, based on two closed-loop control systems, a voltage closed-loop control and a current closed-loop control. Each loop is used to control the power stage in a specific region according to the operating point using the pulse width modulation (PWM) principle. However, the reference signals of each loop are generated from the mathematical equation of a PV cell, whereas errors signals are composed by conventional PI controller. The structure of the power stage is chosen by a DC-DC buck converter, while a dSPACE controller is used to implement the control stage, which allows controlling the system in real time. Furthermore, the proposed control strategy is adapted in order to include partial shading effects. The simulation of the proposed system is performed under MATLAB-Simulink and the obtained results are compared with the experimental results. The comparison results show that the proposed emulator can emulate the I-V curve of the PV module in an appropriate manner, under different environment conditions.
