Abstract

Power factor decides the quality of power for linear and nonlinear loads, due to increased usage of devices which consist of dc supplies nonlinear loads are the major contributor in deteriorating the power factor, so there is an increasing concern over nonlinear loads behavior when it comes to power factor correction it is an important topic to discuss for the utility companies nowadays. Several methods are available to improve the quality of supply, in this paper capacitive compensator circuit is designed which will help in improving the power factor for linear loads and supplying reactive current to the load. Ac voltage controller circuit is used as nonlinear load to examine the issues occurred in nonlinear loads. Same Capacitive compensator circuit was used to improve total harmonic distortion; up to certain extent some improvement in distortions was achieved. In order to remove distortions further, two different filters are proposed which will help in removing the harmonic components and fulfill the requirements for reactive power as well. Proposed filter-1 will be able to work for high voltage applications and proposed filter-2 will work for low voltage applications where current is very high.
