Abstract

Engineering plastics and metals have been extensively replaced by polypropylene (PP) based materials in automotive parts to achieve weight reductions and cost savings. To accomplish this, PP compounds that are made from PP and other components are under intense investigation. In this paper PP was blended with glass powder (from the automotive industry residue) to evaluate the mechanical, flow and thermal properties by using experimental design. The results showed that, in the analyzed conditions, the glass content and the screw speed did not have a significant effect on the mechanical and flow properties evaluated. However, the higher temperature profile used in this study produced composites with higher rigidity, without decreasing the impact strength of the composites
