Abstract


China has constructed a large number of wastewater treatment facilities in a short period of time, raising concerns about the consumption of construction materials and environmental impacts. By exploring these issues, policy-makers can reduce such consumption and improve the sustained development of human society. In this study, we estimate the consumption of materials in the construction of wastewater treatment facilities. The driving force of this consumption is also discussed through an index decomposition analysis (IDA). The results indicate that industry development is the main driver of the construction materials employed in wastewater treatment facilities and that the improvement of industrial water intensity is an efficient way to reduce their  consumption in China.
