Abstract

Al-Hadba’s Leaning Minaret is an appreciated symbol of the historical, civil, and cultural significance of the city of Mosul. It has very significant architectural and artistic value (built in 1172 AD). Its destruction happened on June 21, 2017. The study problem is the insufficiency of previous knowledge to define and clarify the nature of the detailed and instantaneous aesthetic characteristics of Al-Hadba’s Leaning Minaret, which should be invoked for the reconstruction of the minaret in form and spirit. The study goal is to try to fill that lack of knowledge and contribute to making a methodology for reconstruction, a model for other similar operations in the future. The research is based on a number of aesthetic qualities that have not been discussed in the past. For example, it compares the aesthetics of Al-Hadba's Leaning Minaret to how well it has been built the first time. This paper depends on Graves' aesthetic test, which measures aesthetic preference by selecting between comparisons. This test has been aided by Photoshop in order to provide alternative options for the Al-Hadba minaret. Approximately 60 experts in architecture, fine arts, and archeology have been asked to respond to a questionnaire about their city of Mosul and the Al-Hadba Minaret, based on their memories, in order to identify areas of agreement and disagreement regarding the supposed aesthetic characteristics. In general, the results have been strengthened.
