Abstract

With the increased demand for energy resources around the world, the pollution, and the emissions of greenhouse gases (GHG), the search for alternative solutions and means to reduce energy consumption has become vital. The rise in the demand for electric vehicles (EV) is coupled with the need to provide suitable charging stations in order to serve urban areas. The aim of this research is to find the optimal locations for electric vehicle charging stations in Amman, the capital of Jordan. The charging infrastructure location problem has become more significant due to the prevalent adoption of EV in Jordan. Two models have been developed and applied: the Flow-Capturing Location Model (FCLM), and the modified flow-capturing location model. The first one aims to maximize the flow captured by charging stations, while the second one minimizes the total cost of charging stations. The data used has been the Origin–Destination (O-D) flows for the central seventeen traffic analysis zones in Amman. The results of the two models have been compared to analyze the impact of both planning approaches in order to obtain the total cost of charging stations. The results have showed that the FCLM provides valid results for the study area; nevertheless, a cost reduction has been achieved by applying the modified FCLM.
