Abstract

Waste characterization is the primordial step for any successful waste management. The aim of this study is to know the waste of the prefecture of Marrakech, in terms of quality and quantity. A methodological approach has been developed, based on several studies that have been realized in different countries, as well as the budgetary and technical limits, in order to establish a sampling plan. In the light of this study, 3 samples of 200kg have been considered for characterization studies. Waste composition has been 58,51% organics, 10,74% plastics, 8,56% textiles, 7,81% sanitary, 7,15% cardboard/papers, 3,30% other combustibles, 1,46% glasses, 0,69% metals, 0,60% wood, 0,59% shoes and elastomers, 0,55% ceramics and demolition wastes, 0,02% electronic waste, 0,02%  medicinal and pharmaceutical waste. Characterization results reveal that 21, 45% of the overall of waste are recyclable, and the most suitable treatment method is composting.
