Abstract

In order to ensure the safety of dams and the population on its downstream, engineers equip those structures with monitoring system instrumentation. The measurements acquired through this system are then analyzed in order to conclude over the dam’s behavior. Even though the mathematical simulation is more representative of the dam’s behavior than the statistical one, it is rarely used to analyze the acquired data. The preference for the probabilistic method relies on its simplicity and rapidity over the determinist one. In fact, the non-linearity of the dam’s and its foundation’s behavior makes it extremely difficult and costly to build an accurate mathematical model. In this paper we develop a new method to adapt linear models to a non-linear behavior. A method to configure the model is explained and the given model is then compared to a non-linear simulation in order to prove its effectiveness and limits.
