Abstract

Asphalt concrete performance is mainly characterized by the mixture’s response to repetitive traffic loading. Stiffness, resistance to permanent deformation and resistance to fatigue are some of the major asphalt concrete performance properties. In the present study the performance of a dense asphalt concrete mixture with a nominal aggregate size of 19mm (AC-19) is evaluated. In particular, the effect of binder increase and decrease, above and below the optimum binder content respectively, was examined. AC-19 performance was evaluated by carrying out stiffness, resistance to permanent deformation and resistance to fatigue tests. All results obtained have shown that the variation of binder content above and below the optimum binder content affect the mixture’s performance.
