Abstract

Cancer is an asymptomatic disease that can easily affect tissues in multiple parts of the body, and it is one of the leading causes of death. Therefore, it is crucial to detect cancer tissues at the early stage. Moreover, measurement techniques and instruments that can be used for their backscattered signal gathering, processing and image reconstruction are crucial to ensure the accuracy of generated image; hence, the accuracy of tumour detection in breasts. One of the most critical components that should be carefully designed in such systems is the radiator, which functions as the main sensing component. Ideally, it should be lightweight, compact, wideband and unidirectional. By using such radiator, the performance of the antennas can be improved in terms of directivity, gain, efficiency and Specific Absorption Rate (SAR) to result in measurements with close accuracy compared to conventional medical imaging. This paper presents a review of the sensing requirements for microwave breast imaging application, which is aimed to provide a proper understanding, importance and recent developments of radiator and hardware for microwave imaging (MWI) application.
