Abstract


The inhibitory action of N,N'-1,3-propylen-bis(o-1-iminopropyl-phenol) {PIPP; C21H26N2O2} on copper corrosion in hydrochloric acid medium was investigated through electrochemical methods and techniques based on infrared spectroscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The studies revealed that the molecule is a good cathodic-type inhibitor, mainly affects on oxygen reduction reaction. Its adsorption has a dual nature, should be physical in absence and chemical in presence of iodide anions. The addition of iodide into inhibitor solution exhibits a synergistic influence on the inhibitor performance. The iodide causes the surface of metal being porous and a protective/oxide layer formed upon that. A detailed mechanism was proposed by means of adduct formation and inhibitor deprotonation in acid medium
