Abstract

Lightning strikes have damaged several electrical distribution equipments in Themashanga area in Botswana. It is against this background that a study was carried out to investigate the reasons for the unavoidable strikes on the equipment and to recommend remedial measures to reduce/eliminate the impact of the lightning strikes. In this paper, a brief literature review on lightning phenomenon and its effects on distribution systems are considered. Methods of reducing the impacts of lightning strikes in general are considered and recommendations aimed at reducing/eliminating the impact of lightning strikes in Thamashanga area are presented. The paper could be of use to the Botswana Power Corporation.
