Abstract


This paper presents an innovative renewable energy storage scheme based on previously published ideas by the authors as well as a registered patent. The new scheme suits a wide range of applications for intelligent demand management and reserve allocation in electric power systems incorporating smart grids. The proposed scheme uses intelligent sensitivity analysis to guide dynamic mass motion in order to store potential energy using primary renewable energy resources, and then use the stored energy for both peak-demand assistance and emergency reserve supply. The approach presented in the paper is particularly useful for the operating environment of Saudi Arabia where renewable energy (particularly solar and wind energies) is abundant and the peak demand is hardly covered by the available generation resources. A practical application is also presented in the paper, which uses a portion of the electricity grid to demonstrate the implementation of the proposed scheme.
