Abstract

Elemental analysis of Ceylon cinnamon (Cinnamomum verum) using two powerful analytical techniques X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and Laser Induced Breakdown Spectroscopy (LIBS), was carried out. Both XPS and LIBS results indicated the presence of significant levels of potassium and calcium besides other elements. The level of presence of all elements was quantified using dedicated software. These two completely different techniques of elemental analysis mutually substantiate the results of one and the other, and thereby confirming the presence of these elements in cinnamon samples. The amount of potassium present in cinnamon further testifies the health benefits of cinnamon for hypertension, and for the under diuretic treatment in particular.
