Abstract

Georgian churches are valuable and well-known figures of early civilization and history in Anatolia, known as Asia Minor as well. They are located at Northern Anatolia and South West Caucasia. As a part of historical and cultural heritage, Georgian churches from Middle Ages are important to be carried out to next generation. Assessing seismic behavior of these historical buildings in a possible earthquake is critical for ensuring their transfer to future generations and to prolong their lifetime. Historical churches are indispensable parts of cultural heritage; hence they must be well protected and utilized. In this study, Middle Age Georgian churches were evaluated and monitored with their structural behaviors. Barhal, Ishan, Dolishane, Opiza (Handzta) and Dortkilise, located in Northen Anatolia were modeled by using the Finite Element Modeling (FEM). Time history analyses were carried out using real ground motion data with the church models. Displacements and stress values were interpreted and the results were displayed graphically and discussed. By using the results of the present study, repair and strengthening of the Georgian churches should be based on historical, architectural and engineering characteristics and concerns.
